Our Journey

There are many ways to make wine. Our journey begins in Salgesch in the Valais, amid sun, wind, and stone. Here grows what has shaped us for generations: patience, respect, and a love of the craft.

We work where nature and people meet—with experience and curiosity. Good wine needs both: respect for what endures and a passion for what’s to come.

Cave du Rhodan is a family-owned winery. Our roots lie in Salgesch. Here, we continue to develop what makes us who we are. Our heritage and our future come together in the vineyard, in the cellar, and in every decision we make.

Our journey is shaped by a pioneering spirit and hard work. It reflects how we understand wine: as part of nature, as an expression of sustainable craftsmanship, and as a connection between people.

Family & History

The story of Cave du Rhodan begins in Salgesch with hands in the soil and conversations around the table.

What began with the first generation is now being carried on by Olivier and Sandra with a clear vision. Not as a repetition of the past, but as a daily process of thinking ahead—a decision to dare to try something new.

The next generation is already growing up with it. Asking questions. They’re rolling up their sleeves. For us, family means learning together, passing on responsibility, and creating space for new ideas.

Sustainability and Innovation

We work with what grows, not against nature.
We observe; we wait. We intervene only when necessary. We are nature’s companions, not winemakers.

With grape varieties that can withstand the climate. With machinery that causes minimal disruption. With energy that we generate ourselves.

For us, sustainability is more than just a certificate. It means thinking about tomorrow and taking action today. With patience, precision, and the determination to improve every day.

We farm in a way that allows our children and grandchildren to live and work without depleting the earth. For us, being “grandchild-friendly” means treating the soil, water, climate, and people with respect. Designing everything so that it endures.

This applies to how we treat one another as well—with fair wages, time for conversation, and space for family. Because what is meant to last must already be sustainable today.

Our Lively Vineyard

It’s not just grapes that grow among our vines.

Cover crops protect the soil. Wild herbs attract insects. In some plots, Ouessant sheep keep the grass short.

This keeps the vineyard dynamic.
The soil becomes looser, retains water better, and supports the vines even through dry summers.
If you look closely, you’ll see: A healthy vineyard is never made up of just grapevines.

It thrives on everything that grows, crawls, flies, and interacts among them.

Vine Sponsorships & Community

Whenyou sponsor a vine at , you’re accompanying a vine—from bud to glass. Year after year, this grows into your own personal bottle of Humagne Rouge—with a name and a story.

And eventually, we’ll stand together among the vines at the sponsorship gathering. That’s when a gift becomes a sense of community.
You become part of our winemaking family. With patience, responsibility, and the joy of watching something grow.

FAQ - Our Journey

What does organic viticulture mean at Cave du Rhodan?

For us, organic viticulture means working in harmony with nature. We consistently avoid synthetic pesticides and herbicides and instead promote healthy soil life. Our focus is on natural cycles, living soils, and vines that thrive on their own.

How does Cave du Rhodan differ from other wineries in Valais?

We view viticulture not merely as production, but as a long-term commitment to the soil, nature, and quality. Our approach is characterized by meticulous handwork, a mindful use of resources, and the goal of authentically reflecting our region’s character in our wine. As a pioneer in sustainable agriculture, we have had the privilege of serving as a role model for many wineries.

Why is the soil so crucial to wine quality?

The soil is the foundation of every wine. A vibrant, healthy soil provides the vines with nutrients and influences the wine’s aroma, structure, and character. That is why we make targeted investments in building up organic matter and promoting biodiversity in the vineyard.

What does biodiversity mean in the context of viticulture, specifically?

For us, biodiversity means allowing diversity to flourish and actively promoting it. Various plants grow among the vines, insects find a habitat, and natural balances emerge. This strengthens the vines’ resilience and has a positive effect on the quality of the grapes.

How do you decide when it's the right time to harvest?

We don’t determine the harvest date based solely on sugar content. We take a holistic approach to monitoring the grapes, paying close attention to their physiological ripeness, acidity profile, and aromatics. Our goal is to harvest grapes that are in optimal balance so that the wine can reach its full potential.

What role does sustainability play for you?

Sustainability is a central part of everything we do. This applies to viticulture in the vineyard just as much as it does to our work in the cellar and our use of energy and resources. We think long-term and make decisions that will stand the test of time. That’s why our work is grounded in four pillars of sustainability: we actively embrace environmental, social, economic, and emotional sustainability.

Are your wines certified organic?

We work according to organic principles and are constantly refining our methods. For us, it’s not the label that matters most, but rather the consistent application of these principles in our daily work and the quality that results from it. All of the plots we cultivate have been Bio Suisse certified (CH-BIO-006) for years.

How does the climate in Valais affect your work?

The climate in Valais is characterized by plenty of sunshine and dry conditions. This provides ideal conditions for viticulture, but also requires careful water management and tailored cultivation practices. We respond flexibly to climate changes and continually adapt our work accordingly.

What does quality mean to you?

For us, quality begins in the vineyard. It is the result of healthy soil, meticulous work, and making each decision at just the right time. In the cellar, we guide this process as gently as possible to preserve the character of the grapes.
