Ouessant Sheep Bottle Insulator
Cave du Rhodan’s own Ouessant sheep not only tend to the vines, but also provide the wool for our bottle insulators. An exciting project by father Olivier and son Luc. It pairs perfectly with our biodynamic wine set!
"A few years ago, my father and I brought our idea of working with Ouessant sheep to life—the project has become my passion.
The Ouessant sheep is the smallest breed of sheep in Europe and is therefore very well suited for use in the vineyards of Valais. There, these little balls of wool enjoy the delicate herbs that grow beneath the vines and help keep weeds in check.
The sheep need to be sheared once a year. To ensure that this wool—a valuable resource—doesn’t go to waste, I thought of a practical way to use it that’s also related to the winery. That’s how the idea of making a bottle insulator came about.
To do this, the wool is sorted immediately after shearing, then washed, carded, and finally processed into felt sheets.
They are then cut to size and sewn together—and the “Mäh-Wiichiälär” is ready! - Luc Mounir
